Open Space for the Visual Arts

Open SpaceÌýis a summer art immersion program provided by Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ and the College’s Jackson Dinsdale Art Center. It’s specifically designed for future college artists currently completing their junior or sophomore of high school.Ìý

While current high school juniors and sophomores are invited to apply, although first preference will be given to juniors.Ìý

Some high school juniors participating in Open Space may also be selected for the 2027 Jackson Scholars Program!ÌýThe Jackson Scholars Program provides an all expenses paid opportunity to major in art and attend Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ — it includes a scholarship that covers 100 percent of tuition, general fees, room and meals for four years, and also provides professional enrichment opportunities.

Juniors selected for Open Space who do not receive a Jackson Scholars Program offer will instead receive a top art scholarship to attend Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ.

Open Space Details

Open Space is a week-long art immersion experience.

Dates: Sunday, June 14-Saturday, June 20, 2026 — Selected students will arrive later in the afternoon on Sunday, then rotate through JDAC studios Monday through Friday. Then Saturday morning we’ll host an exhibition and reception for students to show off what they accomplished during the week. This will wrap up by noon.

What will you experience?

Selected students will gain hands-on experience in a range of art mediums, plusÌýmeet Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ faculty and guest artists, through which they’ll discover opportunities about a career in art. The experience is held at theÌýworld-class Jackson Dinsdale Art Center (JDAC) on the campus ofÌýÏã½¶ÊÓÆµ.

Open Space curriculum is led by renownedÌýÏã½¶ÊÓÆµ art faculty and explores:

  • Glassblowing
  • Ceramics
  • Painting
  • Sculpture
  • Printmaking
  • Daily intensive studio experiences with Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ faculty and guest artists

Days will be filled with hands-on applied learning, as well as individual time to createÌýin various JDACÌýart studios.

  • Lodging in Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ residence halls
  • Instruction and art supplies
  • Meals and entertainment

Who are we looking for?

We are in search of current high school juniors and sophomores who:

  • Have a high level of artistic talent and interest in studying art in college
  • Have a digital portfolio to submit that includes 6-8 high-resolution photos of their work —ÌýÌýto help when putting your portfolio together.Ìý
  • Good academic standing demonstrated through GPA.
  • Optional: One or two references who can provide insight into you and/or your art, such as a teacher, supervisor from a job, etc.Ìý

Fee to Attend Open Space

The cost to attend Open Space is $1,000 per person. This covers all supplies, lodging, meals, snacks, activities and entertainment.

High school seniors who are accepted to Open Space will receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ in addition to an art scholarship.Ìý
