Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ Forensics hosts first virtual tournament

For the first time ever, the Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ Forensics team hosted their home tournament, the Broncolope, virtually. The team hosted the event with the University of Nebraska–Kearney both asynchronously and synchronously November 13-14.

The Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ team placed second in team sweepstakes in the synchronous portion of the tournament and qualified two more events to the American Forensics Association National Speech Tournament (AFA-NST) that will be held virtually in April.

Senior Isaabella Munoz qualified Poetry Interpretation and first-year student Ally Banks qualified After Dinner Speaking.

The results from the weekend are below.

November 13, 2020

  • Ally Banks, a first-year student from Shawnee, Kansas, placed second in After Dinner Speaking and second in Poetry Interpretation.
  • Victoria Caplinger, a first-year student from Effingham, Kansas, placed fourth in Extemporaneous Speaking.
  • Nikki DeSeriere, a sophomore from Westminster, Colorado, placed first in Duo Interpretation with senior Courtney Hanson and fourth in Impromptu Speaking.
  • Courtney Hanson, a senior from Brookings, South Dakota, placed first in Duo Interpretation with sophomore Nikki DeSeriere.

November 14, 2020

  • Victoria Caplinger, a first-year student from Effingham, Kansas, was awarded top novice and placed fourth in Program Oral Interpretation.
  • Brooklyn Elwood, a first-year student from Sutherland, Nebraska, placed fifth in After Dinner Speaking.
  • Mae Heater, a first-year student from Bennington, Nebraska, was awarded top novice and placed fourth in After Dinner Speaking and was awarded top novice and placed sixth in Poetry Interpretation.
  • Jacob Stulken, a first-year student from Doniphan, Nebraska, placed sixth in After Dinner Speaking.
  • Nikki DeSeriere, a sophomore from Westminster, Colorado, placed second in Duo Interpretation with senior Courtney Hanson.
  • Sam Johnson, a junior from Hastings, Nebraska, placed third in Extemporaneous Speaking and fifth in Impromptu Speaking.
  • Sam Burke, a senior from Denver, Colorado, placed fourth in Extemporaneous Speaking and second in Informative Speaking.
  • Courtney Hanson, a senior from Brookings, South Dakota, placed second in Duo Interpretation with sophomore Nikki DeSeriere.
  • Isaabella Munoz, a senior from Worland, Wyoming, placed first in Poetry Interpretation.

The Forensics team placed second in Team Sweepstakes for the day.

The Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ forensics team continues a long-running tradition of national competitive success, placing in the top 20 at the American Forensics Association National Speech Tournament (AFA-NST) for many of the past 10 years. Most recently, Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ placed 9th at AFA-NST 2019.

Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ is a four-year residential college that focuses on student academic and extracurricular achievement, Hastings’ student-centered initiatives include providing books, an iPad and a two-week study away experience at no additional cost.
