This year's Student Experience Awards honour all aspects of life at UWE, from academics to community involvement. We recognised students and staff who have gone above and beyond in academics, community involvement, well-being, and more. Every nominee deserves a round of applause for their hard work, passion, and dedication to creating a fantastic student experience at ¸Û²Ê¿ª½±Bristol.

The event was organised by our VP Community and Welfare, Fayaz Kareem, alongside VP Education, Sabiha Khan. The awards took place in M Shed on Thursday 30 May, where many students and staff members attended to celebrate their achievements all together. 

Fayaz expressed his thoughts on the event, saying, "Hosting the Student Experience Awards was a true delight. It was a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students and staff at ¸Û²Ê¿ª½±over the past year."

We were honoured to have special guests in attendance, including Vice-Chancellor Sir Steve West, who presented the Vice-Chancellor’s Award and delivered an inspiring speech.

The winners were selected based on nominations, with their performances and achievements throughout the year serving as the criteria for recognition.

Here is the list of all winners:

The Leadership Award: Lily Goodyear

Lily is widely recognised by her fellow students and staff members as proactive, hardworking, and passionately committed to making positive changes and enhancing the student experience.

The Outstanding Student Rep Award – CBL: Ryan Smith

Over the past four years, Ryan has excelled as the student representative for the HRM program. He has been a strong advocate for student voices, communicating feedback clearly and sensitively. His dedication to listening and responding to student concerns has significantly enhanced the academic experience for his peers.

The Outstanding Student Rep Award – CATE:  Archie Veale

Archie has been a superb student representative for the Data Science master's students. He always takes the time to address student concerns and effectively communicates them to the course lead.

The Outstanding Student Rep Award – CHSS: Ross Windsor

Ross, who is about to graduate from the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship, is described as exceptionally dedicated and professional. This programme requires him to work full-time whilst also completing his BSc in Professional Policing Practice. Despite his demanding schedule, Ross excels in his role as a Student Representative, sometimes even attending early morning meetings after working a night shift.

Pride of The Students' Union at ¸Û²Ê¿ª½±Award: Aengus Miralto-Desmond

As City Campus Officer this year, Aengus has been instrumental in representing his fellow students, consistently going above and beyond in his role. Even as a busy third-year student, he makes it a priority to support and serve his student community. His pop-up stalls at Bower Ashton have provided a valuable opportunity for students to share their feedback and suggestions on what they want from The Students’ Union.

The Vice-Chancellors Award: Shannon McKee

Shannon has reached an exceptional level of personal success, overcoming numerous challenges and disadvantages with remarkable strength, resilience, and commitment. Her hard work and achievements inspire those around her, and her academic excellence has earned her a place on the Dean’s list multiple times.

The Inclusivity Award: Sarmada Rangineni

Sarmada holds the position of President at the Women in Engineering, Science, and Technology Committee – also recognised as WEST@UWE. She advocates tirelessly for inclusivity and equal opportunities, setting an exemplary standard for her fellow WEST@¸Û²Ê¿ª½±members and the wider student community.

Student Environmental Champion Award: Chela Rossi

Chela serves as the Sustainability Officer for The Students’ Union, having previously been an engaged member of the Sustainability committee. Her unwavering dedication is evident in her efforts to preserve green spaces across campus and advocate for eco-friendly alternatives at ¸Û²Ê¿ª½±Bristol.

Campaign of the Year Award: Cyberwomen@UWE

Cyberwomen@¸Û²Ê¿ª½±is a student-led initiative spearheaded by a team of talented and committed students, collaborating with universities across the UK. Its mission is to champion equality, diversity, and inclusivity within the cybersecurity sector.

Outstanding Teaching Award - CBL: Joanna Hill

Joanna consistently cultivates a welcoming and inclusive learning atmosphere, putting extra effort into crafting lectures that spark inspiration and deeply engage her students. As a compassionate mentor, she prioritises understanding each student's individual needs and aspirations, offering invaluable guidance and support as they navigate their future career paths.

Outstanding Teaching Award – CATE: Simon Ho

Simon stands out as a remarkable source of support for his students, offering guidance and encouragement both within and beyond the classroom. As a patient and enthusiastic educator, he ensures his students have an exceptional learning journey. Moreover, Simon extends his support by providing valuable advice on career and academic development, showcasing his commitment to their overall growth and success.

Outstanding Teaching Award – CHSS: Hannah Brown

Hannah serves as a Senior Lecturer for the Mental Health Nursing Course, infusing her lectures with enthusiasm and energy that render them both insightful and enjoyable. Her meticulously prepared and relatable teaching style creates a comfortable learning atmosphere, encouraging students to freely ask questions and engage with the material, regardless of its complexity.

Teaching for Sustainable Development Award: Martin Lewis  

Martin passionately supports the inclusion of sustainability in the undergraduate nursing curriculum. Thanks to his efforts, ¸Û²Ê¿ª½±Bristol stands alone among nursing programs in England, offering a credited module dedicated to sustainability for undergraduate nurses.

Supportive Staff Award: Julian Simpson

Julian serves as the programme leader for Paramedic Studies. Even though he's been described as 'one of the busiest people I know' by a student, Julian consistently prioritises supporting and checking in with students. His dedication extends beyond individual support; Julian actively champions positive change within healthcare courses and beyond, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing the student experience.

Student Voice Award: Iain Barton

Iain is a Programme Leader and Senior Lecturer for Mechanical Engineering. Alongside creating a fun and engaging environment in his lectures, Iain manages the Student Representative Student Feedback and Programme meetings. His regular drop-ins, complete with doughnuts and funky shirts, as well as his approachable and personable demeanour, make students feel heard and listened to.
